What Three Things Are You Grateful For?

Updated: Jun 20

As part of an ice-breaker game at one of our work meetings last year, we had to pick a card, read the question, and write our answer on the back.

This is what I picked: 'What three things are you grateful for?'

I thought to myself: where do I start?

We had to write our response on the back.

Some of us read what we wrote as every card had a different question.

I didn't get to read my thoughts because we were time-bound, but I kept the card.

I am happy I didn't throw it away; it sits next to the lamp on my bedside table.

I wanted to take a picture of this little card in a nice setting, especially for this post.

I got as far as the dining room, and I stopped.

I took this picture, I looked at it, and it hit me.

I looked at the picture again—flowers, seashells, and light.

I didn't have to go any further or look for a better setting.

That's it—those are the three things I am grateful for.

I am grateful for flowers, seashells, and light. Those are the three things that connect with everything important and close to my heart.

Flowers

I love flowers.

I am grateful for those flowers.

I have also learned lately that they are called Hakea laurina (or emu bush) and they live in my garden.

So with my gratitude for flowers came gratitude for knowledge and the fact that I have a lovely house with a beautiful garden.

And we have soil, rain, and sunshine for the flowers to grow. And I am grateful for that.

And I have a wonderful husband, David, and a cute (bonkers! but cute) dog, Leia, to share my house and garden with. And I couldn't be more grateful for those two!

Seashells

I love seashells.

Well, obviously, I wouldn't have those seashells if I didn't go to the beach. I love the beach and the waves that bring those seashells ashore. And I can go beachcombing!

I admire the greatness of the ocean. For without the ocean, there would be no beach or seashells.

I am grateful for the ocean, the beach, and seashells. And perfect sunsets are always by the ocean because of Perth's westerly location. And they are SO perfect indeed! I am grateful for sunshine and therefore for the sunset, too!

Light - candles, electric light, lighthouses

Is darkness simply an absence of light? Or is darkness a state of mind?

Some people are afraid of darkness.

I simply prefer to be grateful for light.

For sunshine - from sunrise to sunset.

All kinds of light.

All of them are so important to me.

I associate candles lately with a relaxing bath, for which luxury I am enormously grateful.

Electric light is just a given to most of us; if that power is cut off for a couple of hours, we turn to candles, quite often angry that what 'should be there' is not available for a short period of time.

And lighthouses to me are just magnificent: lonely, majestic, and powerful. Life-saving.And surrounded by the blue of skies and water. Absolutely fascinating.

I
Try to remember that many people can only pray for what I have—and I'm not talking about money or other material things.
I am grateful for my eyes, for my sight, that I can see the wonderful world around me. I can see all shades of blue and the sunset. And for my legs, they bring me to all those beautiful places. I can go to the beach, walk, and smile. And for my hands, I am able to touch and hold. I can bring seashells home in my hands and take pictures. I am grateful for my heart that feels the need for happiness, beats, and pumps the oxygen to my brain so I can think and make a decision to bring my body to the beach, where I belong, where my spirit can feel and be set free. I am grateful for freedom.

WHAT THREE THINGS ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR?
